Ricoh GR lens hoods, caps & filter adapters
There are three ways to protect the front of a GR, and they trade off the same thing: protection against pocketability. A hood protects best and adds the most bulk. A metal cap protects well and adds a step before every shot. A slim stick-on filter adds nothing and keeps dust out. Plenty of owners choose none of the above and keep the camera bare.
The fourth option is a 49mm filter adapter, which is for anyone who wants real screw-in filters - ND, polarizer, black mist - or a wide conversion lens. These are per body: the GR III, GR IIIx and GR IV each take a different adapter, and they are not interchangeable. Screw on standard 49mm filters. The III, IIIx and IV each take a different adapter, and all three mount securely: NiSi's GR III and IIIx parts lock. NiSi's GR IV part is off Amazon on its own right now (it ships inside NiSi's GR IV wide kit), so the GR IV button goes to JJC's bayonet equivalent.

GA lens adapter

The official adapter with a true mechanical lock - GA-1 for the GR III, GA-2 for the IIIx, GA-3 for the GR IV. Pricier than the third-party parts; the one that never falls off.
Before you buy
- Ricoh's adapters: GA-1 for the GR III, GA-2 for the GR IIIx, GA-3 for the GR IV, GR IV HDF and GR IV Monochrome. All three lock to the body mechanically.
- NiSi's MK II adapters for the GR III (PR-11) and GR IIIx (PR-12) both lock. NiSi's older GR III adapter was friction-fit, and the community has detach stories about that one.
- The GR IV adapters fit the GR IV HDF and Monochrome as well - Ricoh lists the GA-3 for both. A diffusion filter is the one thing not worth mounting on an HDF, which has diffusion built in.
- With the Squarehood mounted, Ricoh's GC-12 case will not close.
- JJC's stick-on filter is 1.8 mm slim, uses removable 3M adhesive, and one version fits every GR body, HDF included.
Questions people ask
Does the Ricoh GR have a filter thread?
No. Filters mount through an adapter that attaches to the bayonet around the lens and gives you a standard 49mm thread. Each body takes its own adapter: GA-1 (GR III), GA-2 (GR IIIx) or GA-3 (GR IV family), or a third-party equivalent.
Ricoh GA adapter or NiSi?
The Ricoh GA costs more for the same 49mm thread. What you get is Ricoh's own mechanical lock on every version, and auto-detection of the GW-4 wide lens. NiSi's MK II parts for the GR III and GR IIIx lock too; the falling-off stories belong to NiSi's older friction-fit GR III adapter. If you hang real glass off the front of the camera, the genuine adapter is the version nobody reports picking up off the pavement.
Is the Squarehood worth it?
It is the community's single favorite named accessory and its biggest lightning rod. Every complaint is about price or pocketability, never build quality - the fit and finish are superb. Two gotchas before you order: the GC-12 case will not close over it, and on III-generation bodies the glass version sits close enough to the lens to matter in macro. It is sold direct, not on Amazon.
What keeps dust out of the Ricoh GR lens?
Any front glass helps. The zero-bulk answer is JJC's stick-on filter, which sticks to the lens face with removable adhesive and needs no adapter. A filter on an adapter or a hood with glass does the same with more bulk. None of it is a guarantee.
